Thank you for such helpful comments!! I am going to shorten the accounting period to the end of Sept/open a business bank account with HSBC/register for VAT but not via the flat rate scheme and look for an accountant (but obviously I'd like to understand it a bit as well, which is why I posted )

Note that whilst it is desirable to set up a limited company bank account, it is not a legal requirement.

It is not a specific legal requirement that a company opens and runs a bank account in its own name........however....
