Bottle for powder medications?

Hi all, just after a bit of advice.

I have to take powder medicine mixed with water, and I'm looking for the best type of bottle to do it in. It needs to be about 200ml, with a wide neck, and watertight enough to shake.

I was actually wondering if a baby bottle might work best but I'm not sure how waterproof the top is, especially without a teat.

  • use a shaker from the sports shop- the type that you make the protein drinks.

is it sandishake? there are free shakers in starter kits.

Not sure exactly what you are after (eg I can't picture it in my mind rather than because you have not described it adquatly) but have you tried Lakeland? They tend to sell quite good quality things and I think have a long life guarantee should anything go wrong (ie the airtight feature going or similar). They sometimes have the odd £5 voucher if you keep an eye out for one, normally found on their catalogues and posted here or on HDUK though may be a bit scarce this time of year. However if you sign up you might find they include you in any reward type vouchers.
  • A clip-lidded, tupperwear, container would work.

I have a small, round container (about the size of a glass you would get fruit juice in at a hotel). I mix salad dressing in mine by putting in all the ingredients and then shaking it up.

Something similar to the old Tupperware cups with lids would work. I used to take orange squash to school for my lunch in one of these, 1980-1985ish. Never leaked.

    It's cholestyramine.

I think I need to explain more, I was trying to keep the first post short.

Because of my other meds I have a short window in which I can take the powder. It's made by sprinkling it on 150ml of water, waiting a couple of minutes for it to be absorbed, shaken or stirred, then drunk in one go. If powder gets stuck to the side of the cup and doesn't get chance to soak up water then it sticks to my throat and is painful.

A couple of times I've had to miss the dose. The first time I was in a meeting for a few hours, the second I was on a bus to London. I'd taken a travel mug to try and mix it on the bus, but it was too bouncy and I'd have spilled. Plus when I used the mug on the train it wasn't ideal as it wasn't waterproof enough to shake about without a bit of leakage.

So, I'm looking for a small bottle to carry the water in, which I can then tip the powder into, seal and shake. So I can do it on the bus or nip to the loos during a break in a meeting. The bottle neck needs to be wide enough to pour powder into from the sachet.

The usual sports bottle type things are too big, as there's no way I'd be able to drink so much in one go, and I'm not sure that mixing it with so much more water than the instructions say would be a good idea

The tupperware cups are a good idea, but I've never been very good at getting that type of lid on, I'd prefer a screw top.

The clip lid tupperware might work better, but I'm not sure they're watertight enough to have one bouncing around in my handbag until I need it.

  • If you want 200cc you could try looking around for a food product that comes in a suitable container that you could re-use. I you want a drinking nozzle, cyclists water bottles would do, but they're about 600cc minimum.

Is embarrassment a factor? If not, then Tommee Tippee make sippy cups like this:

    s-l300.jpg

The sippy part folds down for travelling, and the whole top unscrews so you can use it like a cup.

The only downside I've found is that after two years (and a dishwasher) they have started leaking. But they didn't leak for quite a long time ...

Actually looking at Google images to find the above photo, there seem to be a large number of screw-top child cups, many of which are plain, some of which might suit. Head into the baby/toddler section of a supermarket and take a look

eta. Just looked on Tommee Tippee website and the latest designs of the flip-top cup are far plainer, no animals ... That'll disappoint our son!

If a medium wide mouth would work, then I would reuse a smoothie bottle of the right size. If you need something wider then I think screw top beaker is the search term you want.

Embarrassment's not a factor! I hadn't thought of looking in the baby section, I just looked at the kitchen section.

Either the toddler cup or the beaker linked by Theoretica would be ok, I'll have a look and compare them next time I'm in a supermarket.

I think I just wasn't using the right search terms.

Thanks again for all the replies.
