JB Debt Recovery, Letter Help Please

I bought my very first contract phone back in 2000 and cancelled it when the 12 months were up. That was the end of that or so I thought.
I got a letter around December last year saying I still owed them £6, but the letter looked really 'dodgy' like a blurred photocopy, and it was asking us to phone up and pay this £6 over the phone. We ended up ignoring it, but we have gotten another letter from JB Debt Recovery today (this is a different company than the one the letter was from in December) They are now saying that if they don't hear from us in 7 days they will consider taking legal action, where will we need to pay their legal costs and it will ruin our credit score etc
What I am wondering is, does this all sound above board, should we pay, and how can we find out where this £6 owing has come from as it has been almost 7 years since I ended the contract for that phone - so I have no idea!
Thanks in advance

Ask them in writing for proof of debt, a crdit agreement etc. Plu after 6 years it's statute barred - i.e. unenforceable if no contact has been made
I can't think they'll take it to court for £6!This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Maybe the letter they sent in December was within the 6 years so would that count as contact do you think - even though it is coming up to almost seven years now?
I am just a born worrier!
Thank you for the advice, I will maybe write to them asking for proof of the debt and credit agreement as you have suggested, and then take it from there, thank you" Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new ending. "0 -
If you do write, be careful not to acknowledge the debt before the six-year period is up - that's six years since it was last acknowledged by a payment or letter.
You could start with 'I do not admit any liability for this alleged debt'.
Personally, I think I'd treat it with contempt and ignore it. Six quid!0 -

That is what my hubby has said!
The thing is, with it being so long ago I have no accurate idea about how many years it has been - I had my first baby in 2000 which is when I had the phone, and I only kept it 12 months, cannot remember exactly the dates or any details of outstanding bills etc since then, until that first letter sent to me in December last year!" Would the six years class from the date you were cancelling though that could be borderline close, definately ask them to prove the debt though.
Just out of interest what are they saying you owe now?0 -

They just say on the letter that it is an outstanding debt of £6 - no other details about it at all." Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new ending. "0
