My second payment is due in January and I'm wondering what legal grounds I have for refusing to stay here and either moving back home or into a different accommodation. I'm in my first year of study and have lived here since September.
The laundry service is constantly down. The elevators are always broken. And the security door to our building has been broken since we moved in. Despite continuously telling them this we always get told it's being worked on.
Also the fact I don't get on with a couple of my housemates has tipped me over the edge. They're actually disgusting to live with, constantly leaving plates out in the kitchen and have never took a single bin out. I've told them to sort it out several times, and also told the staff down stairs who have took no action what so ever.
Any help is greatly appreciated

You need to read your tenancy agreement with regards to giving notice.
Are you in halls of residence, private rental, or something else? As you have left out some pretty basic information.
And as for living with people with different cleaning standards, welcome to student living - most of them aren't aware of cleaning, they are away from home for the first time, and a fair few don't know how to do it. That's life.0 -

And what does your tenancy agreement say about "cancelling" - its likely you've signed up for an entire year.
You need to check that, as nobody else can see it but you and your co-renters.0 -
I think you need to contact Shelter...
Your contract almost certainly says that you are obliged to pay rent for the whole year. However, if the landlord has seriously failed to provide what was promised then the contract becomes null. For example, if Environmental Health condemned the building as unfit for human habitation then the landlord could not force you to continue to pay rent to live there! The defects that you mention sound serious, but maybe not sufficiently serious to permit you to withdraw from your contract without penalty.0 -

Thanks for your responses. I've been in touch with University representatives and I've got a meeting with the university's accommodation office next week.
Would anyone be interested in reading my tenancy agreement if I censored out my details?0 -

Please do not post anything like that here. This is an open forum, meaning it will come up on google searches et al.
Take your agreement with you to the meeting and any proof (photos, letters sent to uni regarding situation) with you.0 -
