Thanks for the kind words.
The DMP says it will take 5 years and 9 months, but I am hoping my income will increase during this time, so hopefully should be cleared before.
I have just applied for a basic bank account with HSBC, so just need to wait until that is opened so I can send the form back to stepchange with the new bank details on.
Is there some kind of template anywhere for me to send letters/emails to some of my creditors?, as I have some payments due in the next week, and I dont think I will have sent the form in to stepchange by then and dont really want to just cancel the DD's without them knowing what is happening.
Thanks.
5.75 years sounds OK for a dmp

My debt is also in some part due to gambling, since I had my lightbulb moment I haven't gambled at all, it actually makes me sick to think of it and I know if I had kicked the habit six months ago my unsecured debt would be half what it is now.... I think as with all addictions its got to be a zero tolerance situation to kick it (that's why so many have trouble with food addicition - we can't live without it!), the sooner you sort it the better so as has been said cancel in your direct debits/payments to your unsecured debt now, my debt on contacting Stepchange was just over £38k.
Don't wait for your bank account to be set up before contacting Stepchange, I have only competed my details today and i contact them some weeks ago.
One thing I wish I had done is to cancel the payments at least one month before contacting them so I could fund an emergency fund, as a single house owner its a constant worry to me that things will go wrong, my house was built in 1899. After reading many posts from some inspirational people on this board I hope to be able to take over management of my DMP myself within 12months, just now its too much of a stress for me with everything else.Debt on 25/5/17
