Why are they so high in Britain? Always wondered. Awful trains, awfully high prices.

Is it just that we pay 'British Tax'?

No, it's a train with roundabouts and coconut shies on.

The little school down the road from me are planning their Christmas Fayre, but i don't think they'll have any trains there.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Which fare are you thinking of specifically?

I don't think the £26 "fayre" from Birmingham to Edinburgh and the £10 First Class fare from Edinburgh to Aberdeen that I had recently were expensive, particularly once I got £13 back from Virgin as the train was 50 minutes late into Edinburgh.

Booked in advance. I'm thinking more commuter.

For commuter fares, its because they can, the trains are packed no matter what. But most of those fares are regulated by the government and they dictate the increases.

For other fares it is OK when booking in advance, £20 to birmingham is what it would cost in fuel by car. But I think they could lower the non-advance fares, especially at off-peak times.

if all roads were pay as you go and prices set in the same way as train fares there would be outrage - why are train passengers simply treated as an income source when railways are a vital service like roads?
