What date will my employment end?

I've been in my current job 11 years so apologies but I cant remember how resigning works!
I have been offered a new job, so need to resign from my current job
I will be handing in my resignation letter on Friday (2nd December) when my boss is next here.
Im required to give 1 months notice, so will my employment with them end on 1st January? Or 2nd January?
Thank you

Legally, notice begins the day after it is issued.
However most employers would be happy for you to finish at the end of a week rather than count the exact number of days. So, if you want to do less than the full month then you would need to discuss it with them and agree a final day.0 -
Strictly speaking, your notice would take effect on 3rd Dece so expire on 3rd Jan.
In practice, since 2nd Jan is a bank holiday, unless you normally work bank holidays your employer is unlikely to require you to come in for a single day on 3rd.
You could probably however resign by leaving the letter on your bosses desk / emailing it to them today or tomorow - the fact they are not physically in wouldn't change the fact that you've delivered the letter (unless your employers handbook specifies hand-delivery to a specific individual)All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Thank you all
Was just a bit confused as 1st Jan is a Sunday and 2nd is a bank holiday (I don't work weekends or bank holidays)
Maybe I should put in my letter 'I believe my employment will end on 31st December'0 -

If that is what you want to happen then yes, I would do that.
I very much doubt they would object. Nothing stops you dating the letter today and leaving it on the bosses desk. Technically it is served tomorrow even if he doesn't read it until Friday.0 -

Sounds sad but I want to see the look on his face when I hand it in0 -
One more thing, I get paid on the 16th of every month
So on the 16th December we get paid for the whole of December.
If my employment were to end on 2nd January, would I be due any pay?0 -

Yes, they must pay you for all hours worked.
Also you continue to accrue holiday during your notice period and they must either make you take any accrued holiday during your notice or pay you for it after you leave.
Obviously if you have taken more holiday than you are entitled to so far this year they can deduct this from your final pay.0 -
Our holiday year runs from January to December, so I have used all my days up for this year
1st Jan is a Sunday and 2nd Jan is a bank holiday so perhaps I wont be due any money in January0
