Holiday in New York

Options
Hi

My wife and I are thinking about a holiday for about 5 days to New York in the summer 2017 (probably early July). We are not sure whether to go through a travel agent or book the flights and hotel directly. We normally holiday in Europe and book everything ourselves online.

As there will be no direct flights we will have to fly out of Dublin although it is cheaper to fly from the UK then that is an option.

I know there is a New York thread already open but it is very long and it would takes ages to go through it so I am trying to pick the brains of local travelers with regard to money saving ways to get to and from New York and tips on how to make the best use of our time there without busting the bank.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Val :)

Try sky scanner for deals from a mix of airports, use ryan air to get you to those airports if theres a big saving worth doing it

Tuesday is usually the cheapest day to fly.

Direct from Dublin will help you avoid the UK APD taxes so usually the cheapest even if it connects via the mainland (Ryanair would be separate ticket so no advantage there).
  • Going from Dublin you also clear US customs which is a winner for me

I am considering getting a quote from American Holidays so that at least I have something to work off.

Consider a hotel outside Manhattan. . . Just across the water in Jersey City can work out cheaper and the PATH or metro is just a short hop across.

    Fly out of Dublin
Stay in Manhattan as there's far to much to see & do as it is, without having to spend 30-40 minutes travelling in & out every day
Try "Yotel" in January for their sale prices on rooms ... fantastic hotel & great location for subway, bus terminals etc... & only a few blocks from Time square etc...

You should be able to get a package deal for around £550 with this hotel

As the above poster said you will have little enough time to see and do things without travelling time in and out each day. Get a hotel in Manhattan and what you spend on that you will be saving on Metro etc. Pre Book all your visits/sightseeing and you may save money that way too.

I would try American Holidays for a quote along with a travel agent as well to give you a better idea. We actually priced American Holidays, priced ourselves individually and the travel agent ended up beating them both so it worked out well for us and that was travel in December which is a peak time due to Christmas/Christmas lights tours etc.

We got a great deal on the Big Bus Tours, you can bargain them down to a very reasonable price. We paid around a quarter of what they wanted originally, also managed to blag really cheap helicopter trip too which was amazing :)
