I thought that PILON was something an employer used to get someone out more quickly. The idea that an employee who was leaving voluntarily could ask for PILON seems a weird concept, to say the least. Nothing whatever in it for the employer as far as I can see.0

I think you may have missed the point. A years PILON amounts to zero! The OP doesn't get paid unless they work.
