^^This - and HSBC is contacting your mobile number because they are the sender's bank. There is probably no link between your HSBC account and your mobile, unless you register for PAYM.

Is it possible that someone, possibly a friend, relative or colleague, would try to send you money via PAYM?

If that were the case the text should have read (according to PAYM's website):
Someone has tried to send you money via Paym, the UK’s mobile payment service. To learn more about Paym, contact your bank or building society. Opt-out?Reply STOP

Quote taken from http://www.paym.co.uk/received-a-text/ which also says this is the ONLY wording they will send to unregistered users.

The OP seems to have a message about one particular bank with one particular code to use. That seems, to me, far more likely to be a scam than a genuine PAYM message

    Thanks for the further replies.

The SMS message is as follows:

Here's your Activation Code xxxxxx.! Please use this number as soon as possible and then delete this text.! This code will be valid until you log off.

I googled this phrase yesterday hoping for guidance whether it was widely known as either a scam or genuine message but that wasn't any help either.

I suspect its a scam (but not sure what its trying to achieve) or a HSBC mistake. Will wait for HSBC to reply via secure message.
  • In case any of you were wondering HSBC have confirmed no text messages were sent by them to my mobile.

One to be aware of for others maybe.
