'HSBC activation code SMS'

Options
Received a text supposedly from HSBCPaym with an activation code that I 'should use as soon as possible and then delete this text'.

I was nowhere near a HSBC session (or indeed any online session) at the time. Indeed I only log in once a month to push money in/out.

Have just checked and my C/A and regular saver look fine.

Anyone else have similar?

Perhaps someone sent you some money via PAYM? HSBC can only process this if you have activated PAYM. Best to call them and ask.

Thanks for the reply but I doubt it as no one has the details of this account but me.

I've sent them a secure message - lets see what they say.

They wouldn't need details of the account, they'd just need your mobile phone number to send you a payment via paym. Do you pay your phone through your HSBC account because if so it's possible someone has tried sending you money through paym.

Not sure what 'pay your phone' means!

To re-iterate I do not use the Advance current account for anything apart from giving me access to the Regular Saver.
  • With PayM, you register your phone number against your bank account. This allows anyone else registered to PayM to send money to you by simply using your phone number, bank account details are not required by the sender.

So if some else tried to do this and you weren't registered, you would be almost certainly sent a message/SMS to allow you to register and receive the money.
  • Thanks for that.

As you've probably guessed (and I have just checked) I haven't registered for Paym on my HSBC Advance account. Therefore this link between account and phone number does not exist.

    Hence the mystery continues!

But do you pay your phone bill via direct debit from the HSBC account? That would generate the SMS if someone tried to pay you through paym

    No I don't.

Don't be silly. If someone tried to send money to a mobile phone number using PayM and that number wasn't registered, do you honestly think the PayM organisation would contact *every* UK bank asking them if they had a customer with a direct debit to the same network??? Ridiculous!

^^This - and HSBC is contacting your mobile number because they are the sender's bank. There is probably no link between your HSBC account and your mobile, unless you register for PAYM.

Is it possible that someone, possibly a friend, relative or colleague, would try to send you money via PAYM?
