Alternative job for partner help please

Hi,

My partner is a 46 year old retired builder. He worked in construction for many years and is able to fit the inside of houses, do basic electrics, basic stonework, roofing etc. He retired from building as he has a very bad back.

In recent years he has been working within residential healthcare (of children between 4 - 18 years). He has been working in childcare for 6 years and has a Level 3 certificate in Childcare.

We have recently had a baby and he hardly sees the baby, as he currently seems to be working a very large number of hours for a very limited return (within residential childcare).

As a result, I was wondering if anyone could suggest alternative jobs that he may be able to do for more money please?

One option is for him to complete a CACHE Level 3 HBCA course and become a registered childminder. This would enable him to spend more hours with our baby whilst also earning (perhaps) a greater amount of money.

Does anyone have any other ideas please?

P.S. His fairly weak grasp of written English and Maths may be prohibitive when attempting to acquire some types of jobs.

Thanks

  • Is it worth him going to college to improve his Maths and English? He could then apply for jobs such as teaching assistant (possibly in a special school - he may have relevant experience as some children in residential care have disabilities).

If he enjoys working with children, then childminding may indeed be a better solution, not sure about earning power but if there is a need in your area and your home is suitable then it definitely gets over the 'not seeing the baby' problem.

    Another couple of suggestions:

if the pair of you are willing to offer any extended hours, some parents are crying out for early starts / later finishes and sometimes weekends.

respite care for children with disabilities - part of me dislikes the idea of even considering this in order to help make ends meet, but another part of me recognises that this is an area of great need which should be appropriately rewarded. However some children's needs would be too great to meet alongside caring for a baby.
