Lowell 1 taken payment from bank
Hi! Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section, I am looking for some advice,
a company called Lowell 1 has taken a payment of £30 from my bank account, I'm not sure what for, or whether it's a one off or continuous payment, I think i recognise the name Lowell from maybe 10 years ago, I'm not sure what for, but my credit has been cleared and good for a long time, I have had no letter or explanation as to why they were wanting to take a payment, I don't know whether I should call them (although they could say any thing and my memory would be so bad that I would believe anything they say) or whether to call my bank, my credit has been very good for a long time and so I am afraid of cancelling this payment and then my credit being compromised from them,
Appreciate any advice , thankyou

Hi,
Lowell are a specialist delinquent debt buyer.
This should really be posted in the debt free wannabe forum.
How have they got your bank details ?
If they are taking payment by debt card, cancel the continuous payment authority with your bank.
If by direct debt, cancel it.
You then need to write to them and ask what there playing at taking money from your account without permission.
Do they hold an old debt of yours ?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Lowell are bottom-feeding debt collectors who don't care who pays so long as they get money.
You may do better by posting this in the Debt forum as it is almost certainly an appropriate matter for that board.
And I would certainly be speaking to your bank as it may well be a fraud issue if Lowell are using decade-old info to take money today without your express consent.0 -
I would talk first to the bank. If it's a debit card payment surely the expiry date would have passed by now, compared to old details the firm would have had.
If it's a direct debit I wonder if a claim can be made under the DD guarantee about reversing erroneous transactions. After all there is supposed to be written notice in advance of a transaction.0 -
13 months is the dormancy rule. So if they've not taken anything by direct debit for 13 months, they should have removed the instruction and therefore have returned the request.
More info here if it helps (as they must get approval to re-enable any DD):

My suspicion is they've bought an old debt from someone, but how on earth they got your details is another matter, unless they've falsely re-enabled a direct debit. Suggest you check your statement to see the payment method.
Then people here can help further, eg. if there is an old debt, it's probably statue barred (6 years since you acknowledged the debt).Peter
