Father In Law Works For The Dodgiest People

Apologies for the following wall of text.

Father In Law has for the past two years worked in a fuel station for a franchisee of a large petrochemical corporation.

Looking for advice on how he can deal with the myriad problems he is having from his employer.

The franchisee is owner and manager and responsible for all functions of the business. The parent corporation has no input in any pay, disciplinary or grievance procedures.

Here begins the fun:

He currently works full time and hasn't had a holiday over 18 months. Upon raising this matter with the owner he was told the shop isn't making enough money to pay him any holidays.

His contract has been changed repeatedly (Different days and hours etc) with no consultation.

Father in Law is responsible for any shorts in his till (I understand this is legal) but the owner never provides any evidence of any shorts, just deducts them from his pay.

Overtime is never paid, always promised to be paid on next payday.

Continual threats of dismissal for poor performance without any record of said poor performance.

Thus far I have advised him to speak to the CAB but he is unwilling to rock the boat as he believes the owner will simply terminate him for some hocus pocus reason.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read.

Help him look for another job and leave this one of his accord.

I would also get him to check that these cowboys are paying his NI.

I agree. Anyone who doesn't want to rock the boat isn't even remotely going to follow any advice here - it would involve tidal waves!

He could probably make a claim for holidays when he leaves - but evidence that he was refused them would be useful. The same for any deductions.
  • I agree Mojisola, we've spoken of this but he's in his mid fifties and has had a recent run of bad health. He is always on the lookout but pickings are slim recently.
  • Is he incompetent and virtually unemployable?

If not, he needs to get another job.

Easy to say, less easy to do for a person in their 50's with a recent history of poor health.

It might be worth looking for a couple of part-time jobs with more dependable employers? Even if that meant a bit of a drop in pay, the holidays and lack of random deductions might make up for that. And part-time employment is often easier to find as there is a trend towards part-time work.

I thought slavery had been abolished? Why doesnt garage frnachise owner get his own son or daughter to work there? your relative needs to get himself sacked then take this shark to an employment tribunal.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
