Charge for prescriptions for over 60's?

My dad is 79 and has been getting free medication since he turned 60.

The GP changed his medicine for hypertension and I put the prescription in the chemist. I came home today to a voicemail saying my dad needs to pay for the medication.

I'm going to go into the pharmacy tomorrow but can they charge elderly people. I thought all medication prescribed was free to over 60's on the NHS. I will also call my GP for advice.

Has anyone experienced this?

  • Did you fill in the declaration on the back of the prescription?

Age should be on the front of the prescription anyway

This will be some sort of admin !!!!-up (male chicken :) )
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

That brand of medication will have been taken off NHS prescription, I suspect. The chemist will treat it as a private prescription which no matter your age you pay for.

Happened to me, inhaler I got was suddenly removed from prescription and you had to buy it under private prescription. You may have to ask for the generic version from the doctor or a different one. My doctor had to change me to a different brand which was covered by the NHS prescription.

All NHS prescriptions over the age of 60 are exempt from charges IF PRINTED. If the doctor has handwritten the prescription, you may need to confirm your date of birth and fill in the rear of the prescription.
