I am discharged now (June) and am looking into getting a credit card NOT to go into debt with but to put money on and to use abroad. Does anyone know of a card which will accept me?

Get a pre-paid credit like the Virgin card or the cashplus card.DISCHARGED 12th December 2007:T

Thank you both, I hadn't thought of a pre-paid card. That's exactly what I'm after!0

Just a thought - I have a cashcard plus Gold card and must say that I find it very useful. However, when abroad (I travel frequently to Italy) I have had problems in that they will not, generally, authorise the car-hire deposit. It usually means I have to leave a €500.00 cash deposit. Also I believe they make a 2.5% charge for foreign transactions
Last month, an Italian colleague suggested that I get a Visa Electron prepay card - from the Italian Post Office. I did this - it only cost €7.00 and NO monthly or top-up charges. Apparently they are 'all the rage' in Italy.
I suppose it's a bit like a PAYG Sim Card - if you use your UK phone abroad you get charged an arm and a leg, yet it is so cheap to buy a local Sim card.
Haven't yet used my Italian Visa Electron in the UK, but as I've only got €20 credit, I'm not going to risk it.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Thank you Rog, I will be going to the US - do you know if the Visa Electron prepay card is accepted there?
I already have an Electron card which I got with my Cashminder account, will that help me get a prepaid one?
(Sorry if that is a stupid question)0 -

If you go to the Post Office they do Visa Electron with one of 3 different currencies and they cost £10 each card. They do £'s Euro's and $'s. They are all prepaid and no credit check!
There is no charge for transactions but I think (not sure!) they may charge you for using the ATM.
Be aware though - once you get back in the UK you can not get the money off the card.

The whole point about pre-pay cards is that you don't need to have a good credit history, or even a bank account.
I'm pretty sure that you Visa Electron WILL be acceptable in the US - but it's worth checking with your bank first.
You can, also, get pre-paid American Express cards if you're going to the US.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
