Hi all,
Thinking of getting a few chickens. I have read that even though they aren't usually noisy - they can be! I would be keeping them about 100ft from any house - do you think from that distance they would still annoy the neighbours?

My old next door neighbours had a handful of chickens in their garden and we are a semi-detached house on an estate (housing association). It was never a problem. Saying that the neighbours next to them had chickens for awhile as well, til the foxes got them :undecided
Best thing to do is contact your council see if there's any restrictions in your area.0 -

No I think they would be ok at that distance, the egg production won't be affected.:jMr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -
hi sophie131, that distance is fine. they really only made a noise if they are frightened, ie foxes around or of course if you have a rooster some people might object!! ive kept ducks and chicken for 15 years now and they are a pleasure. xx0

They also make a noise when they lay an egg
I've 16 in my garden. Right now they are clucking away as they want out, but it's not a major noise
They cluck when they are let out, when I go to them with treats, if something spooks them, or when they decide they want into my kitchen
It's roosters that are noisy. They can crow anytime of the day0 -
the sound of chicken mooching about in my garden i find quite soothing.Occasionally they decide to have a bit of a "sing-song" for no apparent reason., which i find more amusing than annoying.
you can always bribe the neighbour with eggs!Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

You may also want to give some thought to another issue apart from noise; vermin.
Not just the pesky foxes but rodents can be attracted to the chicken food. If your neighbours see a sudden arrival of rats, co-incidental to your chicken-keeping, they may well be very upset and choose to involve the local council, as well as give you grief.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I think you'll be ok so long as they can't hear a rooster nearby. If you happen to live within the hearing of a rooster then hens can go nuts and be very noisy. Otherwise they shouldn't much disturbing noise.Mortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000
