Tax calculation help

Hi,

Apologies if this isn't in the correct section but I wasn't sure where else to ask.
I have just recieved a p800 saying that I owe £526 in tax from the 15-16 tax year. I changed jobs in Mid October 2015 so had paid tax of just under £500 between April and the date I left. My old job messed up the paperwork so I ended up being paid my last wage in October and outstanding Holiday in November, on both of these wage slips my old job had refunded me tax meaning that as far as HMRC was concerned I'd only paid £188 in tax for that year.

What I wondered is how I can sort this out? I can't afford to pay back £40+ a month and it's not like this is my fault this happened. (The timing is coincidental btw, my partner worked for the same firm and when he left they withheld his last two months pay, we are currently in the process of taking them to court. The firm have done this to other employees such as changing company policy so that employees suddenly owe lots of money to the firm if they've upset them etc).

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm not disputing HMRC being paid what they are owed I'm more bothered about it being the old jobs fault but I'm bearing the brunt. To be honest I hadn't realised they'd paid me back tax in the first place.

Thanks
