Applied For A Loan Letter

Got a letter through the post today claiming I had applied for a loan, it's from "Amigo Loans" one of the loan providers at the dodgy end of the market. They claim they were contained by another dodgy company that also try target the most vulnerable, "PingTreeLtd".

They have my name and address correct. I phoned them, told them I hadn't applied for any loans, That I don't do loans full stop.

Are they trying it on (close to Christmas...), or does this sound suspicious?

I have done an Equifax check, and it's not showing anything abnormal ("You have a score of 519. Your score is highly predictive that you would be a strong candidate for credit. You are well above the average for UK borrowers. Most credit grantors would consider this score excellent")

I had one like this once and as I hope to never need any kind of loan again and certainly never applied for this, I phoned-up the firm concerned and gave them both barrels and immediately got myself put on the toxic/never deal with again list.

It was a week or two later that I got a contact from my bank and credit card security about my identity being misused.

    Oops... Sorry....

So maybe contact them and you bank etc to see that your back is covered. It will probably be a simple matter of issuing you new numbers etc. :)

Your score isn't seen by lenders so don't worry about it.

Main thing is all your data on your credit file all correct.

Any entries for Amigo Loans on there ?
  • Nope, a couple of car insurance searches in the last couple of weeks (which I did), and nothing else for the last 6 months...

So it's currently looking OK. I am reasonably good at looking out for things (internet savvy, shred paperwork etc), but nothing is 100%.....

I wondered if it's common (or legal) for loan companies to pretend that you applied for the loan, in the hope that you just sign up for the loan anyway when you get the letter.. Obviously this time of year, plenty of people wanting payday loans I expect...

As well as checking Equifax there's the other 2 agencies to check too.

Its not legal nor is it illegal, sounds like your name was used, just keep an eye on your reports.
