Overpaid Salary

Hi, I hope someone can advise.
I got my payslip today for my November pay which is due to be paid tomorrow. When I checked it, it was obvious that they had put through the wrong amount for holiday pay which means I am being paid more than I am entitled to. I immediately emailed HR and payroll and flagged up the error and asked them to advise the actual amount I need to pay back once they have adjusted for tax/NI The overpayment has also resulted in me paying more to my Student Loan than I should have
I am hoping for an answer urgently from HR, what would be a reasonable amount of time for them to sort this out out get back to me. I don't really want them to deduct the overpayment from future salary, but rather just send them a cheque for the overpaid amount. Would that be possible, or does it have to be through payroll. This would mean no pay next month.

Timescale - probably a couple of working days.

Its likely everything will have to go through payroll, and if that is what they have said then you should take that as it is.

I haven't heard of an overpayment being made up by cheque, but I suppose you can ask. If it would be such a drastic amount then at our place they would spread the repayment out over a long period, which would be perfectly reasonable. There might be something in a staff handbook about that.

Unfortunately if you earn over the threshold I'm 90% sure you won't be able to claim back the overpayment from the student loans people, but it might be worth checking with them.

Thank you, yes I guess it will be done via payroll, makes sense really. Just wanted to get it cleared up ASAP! The student loan thing is a pest as I dont earn over threshold but you have to wait till the end of the tax year before you can reclaim.
Just need to eait and see what payroll propose as a solution.

If I'm interpreting the situation correctly you have been paid 2 months salary. Is that basically the situation? If so, and HR / Payroll faff about, just make sure you put the 'extra' aside and don't touch it before you are actually entitled to receive it.
Don't go on a spending spree and then complain that you have no money next month.
I don't think you are likely to do so, but there have been numerous posts in the past where people have stated they had received money which they knew they weren't entitled to. They had spend it and the moaned about having to repay it.

That is more or less the case. My plan is to put the overpayment into a separate account and not touch it until the situation is resolved. I have no intention of spending a penny of it!

    UPDATE
Well the outcome is that they blamed the outsourcing company they use to process payroll and they have emailed me a figure to transfer back to them asap which is fair enough.
However, my worry is that my tax and NIC will not be recorded properly and that obviously I had to pay £184 for student loan that I didn't need to. I pointed out that I wouldn't be able to claim it back till after the tax year ends, they said it would sort itself out in next month's payroll.
