Part time & bank holidays

If someone works part time and they work Wed, Thur & Fri every week but over Christmas Mon & Tue is a bank holiday. They don’t normally work this but because they are a bank holiday are they entitled to any extra leave? Interested to know the answer to this.

You should speak to your HR they will know their policies.

I used to work weekends on bank holidays, you would get double pay and a lieu day if you worked it. I believe its changed at that company where bank holidays are now added to your annual leave balance. If you work it the hours stay on your holiday allowance if you dont they deduct that day.

I dont believe there is anything stating people should be paid more and or get additional holidays on bank holidays. As far as im aware your employer can get you to work a bank holiday at a normal rate with no additional benefits.

I think the question is slightly different to that - the OP will rarely work bank holidays. OP, it is possible that your holiday allocation already takes account of a pro-rata amount for bank holidays. You are entitled to a basic minimum of 28 days (pro-rata) whatever days of the week you work - people who work full time get exactly the same. If you get more than that, the public holidays are usually calculated pro-rata for part-time people and just included within the annual calculation. But as Spadoosh has said, your starting point is to ask your manager or HR. They will know the answer.

  • Every company is different. Where i work a bank holiday is a normal day. We don't get extra pay or time off if we work it. We get 28 days holiday a year and if we want a bank holiday off we have to book it as part of our holiday entitlement. As others have said ask your HR department.
