Hi, I'm one of the people who has 'too much money to qualify' - in our case it's pension credit that we can't qualify for, and all the things that go with it. And yes, we pay our council tax - it's £94 a month for a 2-bedroomed bungalow. I wouldn't be able to sleep at nights if we didn't pay this - too scary to contemplate.
My granddaughter also has 'too much' to qualify, in her case it's family income too high with both parents working (mum about to be made redundant from Ofsted) so she can't qualify for Education Maintenance Allowance.

Yes you don't want to be on the recieving end of Bayliffs of the crown.
I'm sure it won't come to that but they have higher powers than normal bayliffs and I believe they're allowed to break into your house.0 -
Have any of you watched that programme on telly about bailiffs, I am amazed at what they seem to be allowed to do. For unpaid council tax the people they are visiting and harrassing and bullying are not people who are refusing to pay or living a great life on the proceeds, lots of single mums, people who are obviously on the breadline, and living in quite bad conditions, I don't understand why these people are liable for council tax anyway.
What kind of a person can go into a house with several children living in it and take the television. All those threats, those people simply haven't got the money and asking for over £1000 from people who have clearly never seen £1000 in their whole life seems wicked. The stress they cause cannot do a family any good.
I do hope that you GF manages, she sounds lke she is beating them at their own, good luck
And to the people who can only be nasty, it can happen to anyone, no one knows what is round the cornerLoretta0 -

And then get taken to court the following day for not paying the TV licence fee.
I totally agree with a local income tax and hope that the libdems campaign will force reform.0 -
Yeah, of course that's likely
If you have bills you have pay them I'm afriad. Bayliffs are simply doing thier Job - and in taking away the TV are probably doing thier kids a favour!0 -
i am also a single parent with 4 children under the age of 14yrs old. My ex husband who I divorced 3 yrs ago doesn't pay maintenance because the child support agency said he doesn't earn enough despite him taking home £190 per week. He's not paying rent or council tax because he is living with his girlfriend in a council house that is in her name only and hasn't disclosed that he's living there, even after 7yrs!! He made up a load of lies which the CSA swallowed. As a result i have the option of sitting at home on benefits whilst letting the state pay for the upbringing of my children or goin out to work. I work part-time in a crappy office job within a builders yard earning minimum wage and have been told that due to my working tax and child tax benefit that i am £3 over the limit for any kind of rebates except for the 25% single person rebate. So i fully sympathise with people who are struggling to pay bills. If single mothers work we lose our right to a lot of benefits, as a result our children suffer. If we dont work we accuse of being a drain on the economy! Not all single mothers are single mothers by choice after drunken one nights stands as often portrayed by society. Some of us are in the predicament due to marital violence and do it to protect our children after enduring years of beatings. The government help the rich and make the less fortunate suffer even more when it comes to council tax.....it's purely to benefit the fat cats with their sprawling country residences.
