My wife always asks for discounts at small privately owned shops. This often gets a result and she will often get 5 - 10% off almost anything she buys from clothes, books, cosmetics etc. She works on th ebasis that it does no harm to ask especially if you are spending a substantial sum or buying several items. She gets a result about 75% of the time.
Also, if she has to return anything faulty or not as described, she always asks for extra to cover her time and costs ( especially pertrol and parking). This works about 90% of the time and this includes the main retailing outlets. I believe she is quite correct. It's all well and good getting your goods refunded or replaced but what about the cost of returning them, this often isn't factored in by most of us. In most cases the retailer will give some form of payment or voucher to cover this expense.
Good luck
