'indemnity claim' problem

    The consumer is protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme. This says that if a direct debit is done either too early or for the wrong amount, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund from the bank (regardless of whos fault it was).

    The DIrect Debit Indemity is what the banks use internally to get their money back. There is no need for the consumer to raise an Indemnity Claim. They should use the direct debit guarantee.

    Some naughty banks like to make out that the customer has to raise the idemnity claim and hope they either don't know anout the guarantee scheme, or will think that idemnity scheme = guarantee scheme and go along with the bank. Some clerks don't know what the guarantee scheme is (they have only been trained about the indemity scheme).

    The moral of the story is. If a direct debit goes wrong, know to ask for the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme and get a full and immediate refund from the bank. Don't let the bank tell you otherwise.

    Thanks, i spoke to BT before posting it was them who told me ask my bank to do so, and they could do no more as their systems were down.my bank told me to contact customer care; as the DD was going out today they were able to stop it going out and when i check my statement tommorrow morning there will be no sign that the payment ever tried to leave my account. so was no need to do anything else.
    All i need to do know is talk to BT on Monday when their systems are up and running, and check everything is ok for next months as i've paid nothing for this month, so want to double check i'm not going to get stung with the missing months line rental
