Which bike bag?

  • Hi, I am not much more about the bike bags but I would recommend you should always use waterproof bags in these kinds of situations.

Check out the Topeak system of quick track boxes.

I use an mtx, which slides on and clips on securely, but you need a Topeak rack to match. My one has pannier bags built into each side, which you can unzip for more space, but often I use it as a standalone box. I think they do boxes with the same system without the panniers.

Here's a review for a slightly different box than mine. This one has an expansion zip at the top, which I don't have.

    Go old school ... Carradice

Hung one of their Barleys off the back of my bike about 8 years ago. Still going strong and on the original leather hanging straps (and the bit of dowel - all looks very retro but works well). Big enough to carry waterproof jacket rolled up tight, small pump, bike lock, tools spare inner tubes, gloves, food etc. Manages to keep everything nice and dry too.

It's well below your budget, but I use one of these:

It's deceptively big - I can carry a pair of trainers (one in each side pocket), a full change of clothes, lunch, my wallet and and my phone. I've also managed to squeeze an iPad in on top on occasion.

One caveat is that my rack is slightly too narrow for the straps, which means the "loop" side of the velcro ends up being too short. I fixed it by stitching extra loops along the full length of the strap and now there's plenty to secure onto.
