How forgiving are Debt Collectors?

Sorry Probably not the right title but i couldnt think of the right wording! Anyways if you have been sent letters from debt collection companies, how often do you recon they will give you say 3 months grace to make the payment if you ask? I mean if theres no chance of payment now, but possibility in say 3 months, will they give you the chance or just come round and rob your telly? lol

    Hiya honey,

I have no experience of Debt Collection Agencies at all, but I'm sure someone else will have so I'm giving you a little bump to the top.

I think the general advice is to send a letter recorded delivery, enclosing a £1, plus a statement of income and expenditure. Explain that this is all you can afford at the moment, then keep on paying it. Don't necessarily tell them that you can get the money later, or they might pressurise you to try and get it now. The main thing is to keep paying something, so that if it does go to court, it shows that you haven't tried to abandon the debt.

    Hi

things depend on what sort of debt it is (fines and council tax or CCs), whether they have a CCJ against you already, etc, so put up a bt more detail.

Beyond that unless they have a court order and gain peaceable entry, they cannot rob your telly, unless you want to give it to them. We would advise selling it yourself for three times as much and giving them the dosh if it came to that.

Hi OFN - There are some EXCELLENT template letters, for asking crditors to accept reduced/token payments, on:

    http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk

You could, also, ring one of the debt counselling charities, such as CAB, CCCS or National Debtline for some free and impartial advice.

One thing you don't need to worry about, though, - they CAN NOT send bailiffs round to your house unless they first obtain a County Court Judgement - looks as though you're a long way from that.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Even IF they were to take you to court, they must first issue you with a County Court Summons. On the summons you would be asked if a. you admit the debt and b. if you would like to pay. You can, at this stage, make an offer, to the court, for monthly payment at an amount that YOU can afford, based on your Income/Expenditure.
It would be most unlikely for a court to order you to pay at a rate higher than you can afford and not only you, but also the debt collection agency, would be bound by the decision of the court, and any further attempts, by them, to get you to pay more, would be illegal harassment.
    Good Luck.
