JSA and phone in sick + new Job

Hi,

I went for Interview on Friday, and late afternoon received a call saying I have got the job.

They want me to start work from Monday (tomorrow)

I have been on JSA. My dilema is that I am due to sign in tomorrow morning too. It will be impossible for me to attend JSA sign in as I will need to commute to my new job.

What should I do? And what number do I call to let them know I have a job.

I was thinking of giving it a few days before telling them I have the new job. This is just to see for myself what the job will be like. In addition I would then receive my payment on Thursday. But concerned they could find out? Or I may be prosecuted?

Also do the job centre still give you a uniform allowance? Or travel allowance when you have found a new job?

Thanks

I would explain when you start you will need to make a phone call at x time or ask if you can go for your break (if you get 1). What time are you due to sign on ? Does it coincide with when lunch would be ?

What does your booklet say about if you have found a job ?

No need to give details of where your working, could make something up, say your working for a friend who has no phone number.
  • You don't have the luxury of 'giving it a few days' as you've an appointment tomorrow to cancel or postpone (beware they ask to see proof of why you can't attend appointment so it wouldn't really work that was my experience of a JSA Jobcentre when you asked for appointment change in 2015) what you can do is fill in booklet get it in the post or walk it into the job centre if you can? You're lucky non attendance to apt will begin the close down procedure anyway, rightfully receive money on Thursday you are entitled to for period up to the day of starting job.

If you are then dismissed (it cuts both ways) you can rightfully go back to job centre knowing you done nowt wrong.

There is never any keeping options open regrettably as easy as it might appear - it isn't. I recommend post because you could find yourself in a situation where you have no credit for calling or poor signal location, I wouldn't trust sending an email either these days.
  • Thanks guys.

My dilema is that when I phone them tomorrow morning to let them know I have a job, and can not make my sign in the morning due to my first day at work.

Will I still get my JSA paid into my bank account this Thursday? As they pay the benefit every two weeks. Or will it be a complete stop of payments. If I am not mistaken this payment is for the previous two weeks?

What does 'phone in sick' have to do with the OP?

Yes, you will still get your money as JSA is paid two weeks in arrears.

Its not your fault your first day is the same day when you sign on.

As mentioned fill in the booklet, if theres a phone number to call then call it.

As for the question re travel and uniform allowance ?

Maybe thats something you should have asked the Job Centre on friday.

Its happened to most of us, when I was on JSA, i was lucky enough to get a job round the corner from a Job Centre, wasnt my Job centre but I could go there and use their phones and get the right person.

You are not going to go to prison if you dont get a chance to call them in the first few days, but you should be able to during your break. Worst case scenario, if you get the full 2 weeks pay they will simply deduct the few days worth of JSA next month.

They will be more glad you got a job rather than being upset with you being a couple days late in telling them you are working.

Help with travel, that is fine as long as its normal transport you are using, they wont give you petrol money for example, not sure if they cover trains or not, you'd have to ask. I think its for a week or two. Doubt they will provide if for a full month.
