Ok so I have now got a temporary job for 4 months YAY!! So Im looking to make a commitment to sorting out my £5k worth of debt Ill go ahead and list them and if people can give me advice on these maybe some can be written off who knows etc etc im not sure how to post a SOA but if anyone has the link i be more than happy to post one.

Council Tax arrears

I believe im behind to the amount of £817 for a previous flat and £586 on the current year Already gone to court on this I was defaulted in my absence and now have a ccj and bailiff threats.

Lowell

This amounts to £1,375 I have just set up a payment plan for this of £20 a month for the combined total None of these are statute Barred.

Advantis

This is for £1,311 water rates on a house I lived in for just under a month and this was like 5 years ago I was on benefits and tbh they don't really bother me I get a letter maybe once a year offering settlements.

GDR £595 Relates to a sofa i took out on hire purchase around 4 years now never kept up with payments.

Robinson Way £592 This was when I got a wonga loan around 7 years ago suddenly the amount came out of my account, somehow I didn't realise this was Wonga and did a charge back. This was for LLYODS TSB account which became my now TSB account TSB have never chased me and LLYODS again hardly ever write once a year

Caboot £221 Vanquis Card

TOTAL DEBT £5487

So im on a pretty awful wage works out to £1090 a month after tax I believe if I worked it all out correctly.

So does anyone have any advice on the debts I've listed? How best to approach them etc etc I dont have much left over at the end of the month and I can do a SOA if someone could post that link

This is your only priority debt and so this is the one you need to sort out first.

You have a liability order from the magistrates court, not a ccj. The councils often send these to bailiffs quite quickly, and they charge £75 when they do so, with a further £235 if they visit.

So if it's still with the council, phone on Monday to set up a plan. If you can clear them both by April that would be good. Otherwise, try for 12 months.

Frankly I wouldn't change what you are doing with the others until this one is sorted.

    Are you a homeowner ?

Do you have assets worth more than £1000 ?

Do you own a car worth more than £1000 ?

If you can answer No to the above, and you can budget so you have less than £50 left after essential bills, do a debt relief order.

A debt relief order can be a low cost alternative to bankruptcy. A DRO is only available if you owe less than £20,000 if you live in England or Wales or less than £15,000 in Northern Ireland. You don't pay anything towards your debts for 12 months - and after that they will be written off.

Rules me out i think as I could be unemployed in 4 months time but then find a job at which point doesnt this cancel the DRO It would be sweet if you could work have a DRO and not pay anything to get them wiped out

I think you misunderstand, of course you can work.

Its designed for people whose wage just covers there essential bills, but not there credit repayments, do you fall into this category ?

Stepchange have a free to use debt remedy tool, you can use it as often as you like, fiddle about with your budget, see what it recommends.

You must have £50 or less left to qualify for a DRO.

    https://www.stepchange.org/Debtremedy.aspx

This is a good option for you if you have an erratic income, and are not always able to find work, as incomes going down, will not affect a DRO at all.

Do you accept that you are liable for the Council Tax charge due on the previous property ? Is there any reason you think you shouldn't have been liable ?

    Craig
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
