My daughter wanst a lap top for christmas so thought I'd think about it now so I can look out for bargains, I also obvioulsy want to be able to monitor the sites she goes on etc to keep her safe.
Any advice re deals bargains etc would be great and any advice on her the technical side of thisgs would be good too. We already have a computer at home so would need to change to wireless access I guess.
Anything I haven't thoought of??

PC World from £299 which isn't bad although their after sales service leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion/experience.

Asda have (had) a laptop for £275 with 15" screen, 512Mb Ram, 80Gb HD, DVD player, Vista & wireless. Worth spending another £25 adding another 512RAM to make Vista run smoother.

People on there can advise you much better than I about wireless but you don't have to go wireless if you don't want to, you can connect multiple PCs to a broadband internet service via a router with cables to each pc/laptop.From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings

Just bought my daughter a laptop from www.laptopsdirect.com the service was great, hers was not the cheapest, as she got it for uni, but they are offering 100 pounds cashback till end of October. May be worth you having a peek.0

All new laptops will come with wireless network cards, and usually with network cards if you want the wired approach. |In theory you dont have to go wireless if you want both computers on the internet, but it will mean trailing cables, unless you network over the mains as shown here: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46494&criteria=network%20over%20mains&doy=20m90 -
