Purple shampoo for dyed blonde hair - any experts?

I got some Fudge violet shampoo to counteract any brassy tones in my blonde highlights.

I was hoping for a bit of help about how best to use?

I use the Tresemme reverse step conditioner - the one you shampoo out. Quite often I use Phillip Kingsley Elastizer too, which you also shampoo out.

Now I'm a user of Batist dry shampoo to stretch my between wash out & when I wash my hair I usually give it one good wash first (with head & shoulders colour) as it's a bit grotty, then I put the conditioner or Elastizer in, then I shampoo out with Phillip Kingsley shampoo.

When I use the fudge violet should I use it for the first shampoo or the shampoo after the conditioner?

  • From what you say the first shampoo is simply to get rid of product build up so you're probably best using the violet one for the second shampoo to get the best out of the colour correction. I love the Philip Kingsley elasticiser btw :)

Yes, the first one is to get rid of build up.

Just a side note; I'm assuming that you are using the Elasticizer as a repair product due to lifting the colour?

If you use aerosols like Baptise, they will dry out (damage) your hair, if you are trying to get around the roots being oily and trying to eek out an extra day before washing, try the powdered dry shampoos (I think Baptise, Aussie and a few other highstreet brands do them- check larger Boots and Superdrug), try to cut back on the aerosols though as they will add alcohol and other drying products though which work well in terms of adding the product to your hair but at a cost of drying out your hair.

It just means your wasting all that time and money spent on masks such as the Elasticizer and I know from experience that if you have lifted your hair colour however slowly and safely, it will still be weaker and need extra help just by itself already!

If you did want to go all out and buy a more expensive powered dry shampoo (I'm sure they work better I just have no money to try!) I know Aveda make them, I think Bumble and Bumble, Pureology Kolorane and Redken might and it's worth checking other brands you purchase such as Phillip Kingsley just in case they do bring out new things. Don't though go thinking baby powder will sort things out- it is *not* the same; baby powder and talc will often have added oils or product which will make your hair feel heavy and often mean your scalp is left itching after a few hours. It's also a nightmare to apply! Powdered dry shampoos normally come in a specially made pot/bottle which is a whole lot easier to apply.

In terms of violet shampoo; I'd say look at pre-washing products which apparently are not as stripping. But if you wanted to test if you needed to even do this; the idea is if you use shampoo and get a lather which is rich and dense, you have either used too much shampoo or your hair didn't need it that time (eg could have skipped that step). I know it may feel like going against how you feel but try using just one wash but leaving it in for a few seconds and massaging it over your scalp. If it's really not moving from the spot and your hair feels like tar then maybe you do need another wash but try seeing if your hair is OK after just one wash (violet wash) and follow with a shampoo.

Another idea could be to use a cleansing/clarifying shampoo every week the closest you can get to a treatment wash and then follow with your usual mash or treatment, You should only need to do one clarifying wash a week and other than this I'd try seeing if your hair is OK on one violet wash (followed by conditioner) rather than adding another step. Try it for a week, see if it works otherwise you are stuck needing to use so many different products just to wash your hair...

My hair is in pretty good condition, I use the Elastizer as a preventive measure.
I've tried most dry shampoos from cheap to expensive, I love batist & always come back to it, I get the brown one.
I generally only wash my hair once a week..... I know I'm a minger :-)
But it's long & thick & wavy, then I have to make it poker straight with GHDs, I probably should do it every 4 days really!

I don't mind using a few different products to wash it, the time is in the straightening, the washing is pretty quick, even if it's 3 steps.

Use the toning shampoo as your last shampoo, you don't want another shampoo to wash it away.

Either find an alternative for the Batiste or wash your hair more often. You can spot (and smell!) a Batiste user a mile off, sorry but it's obvious. For someone that clearly invests time and money in your appearance, you're undoing all your good efforts by using it.

Spot by the powdery look do you mean?

If so that's why I buy the coloured one.

I used it yesterday - the final step, the wash out.

    It's brilliant!!!

Anyone looking for a purple shampoo - FUDGE
  • Glad it worked out for you :-) I laughed when you said about washing your hair once a week- don't worry your hair hates being washed too often! I only wash mine twice a week and I use dark brown batiste on my roots. My hair looks better the day after washing because it's so annoyingly fine like a baby's hair and there's so much of it. It's a lot easier to style too. Your hair sounds like the dream hair I would love to have!

Actually mine is very fine too, but my God is there a lot of it!!!!!

Where I straighten mine it looks fine right away, but I know what you mean about looking better the day after - that's true for nearly every other styling method.

Like you I only use the batist on my roots.
