Salary overpayment

I left my recent job last week and was paid a few days before leaving. Now my previous employer are claiming that I was overpaid as they paid additional sick leave that I wasn't entitled to, and which they were going to recover in next months pay. (But now can't because I have left). I have no issues about paying it back if that is the case but I haven't received my pay slip or any evidence that I have been over paid. Should I not see a pay slip first to see if what they are claiming is true?. I was also entitled to a bonus as well, and i feel they could be trying to claim my bonus back, which I feel I am entitled to.

Sounds good to me - write telling them that you would like a breakdown of what they think you owe them, and of course your payslip will provide this. You could egg the pudding a bit and say of course you do not want money to which you are not entitled, but your own calculations suggest that you have not been overpaid, [and indeed that they may owe you money]......
PS - have you calculated due holiday pay as well? This one could go either way, of course - they could owe you money or vice versa.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
You should ask for their calculations to show the overpayment.
Whether you are entitled to a bonus depends on the terms of the bonus scheme, not whether you feel entitled to it. What are the terms?0 -
Thanks for the replies. I think I will definitely ask for a calculation before I hand over any money.
The bonus was agreed to everyone in my old team as we met our team targets. So when I said I feel entitled, I meant that I was working there during that time and helped meet the target.0 -
That may be, but bonus schemes always have rules. It is very common that bonuses aren't paid to leavers. Whether that is the case with your employer is something you will need to ask. Thanks for the replies. I think I will definitely ask for a calculation before I hand over any money.

Asking for a breakdown is entirely reasonable.
Check the terms of the bonus scheme to see whether you are, under the terms, entitled to anything.
Bear in mind that many bonus schemes are ultimately payable at the discretion of the employer, and may well exclude anyone who has left the company before payment is made, eve where they have contributed to the work resulting in the bonusAll posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
If you were monthly paid, then it's possible your payslip won't be produced until nearer the end of this month.
However, where I work I'd be asking our payroll provider to do a breakdown before producing the payslip if we knew you owed us money.Signature removed for peace of mind0
