Washing clothes - particularly shirts!

I was just wondering if anyone knew the best way to wash a new shirt (or an old one for that matter:D ) - is it best to leave it undone or do the buttons up and turn it inside out? Strange question possibly but I've just got some nice new ones from M&S on sale and I want to keep them as good as possible.
In fact does anyone know any great strategies for keeping clothes great?:T
Thanks

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

I have hubbys buttoned up.. hang them straight on a hanger as they come out and iron while they are damp if I can.
If they are washed inside out I found it makes the collars curly.. then they are a pig to iron back to the right shape!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Generally it's a good idea to wash dark coloured things inside out as the inside then fades, rather than the outside.0
