Maternity pay in lump sum - reclaiming voerpaid tax

Hello,


my Wife has recently been made redundant from her post and has been paid out a redundancy package (less than taxable limit so is all tax free)


She is due to give birth in January and has also been paid her entire occupational maternity package in one month (will be paid at end of Nov). Obviously, maternity pay is taxable so she is going to be stung very heavily on this as she will only receive one month's worth of tax relief (11000/12). Some of this income will of course also relate to what SHOULD be paid next year (ie after April 2017.


My wife doesn't plan on working again this tax year, so will have overpaid on tax as she wont be using the Personal allowance from Dec-Mar either....


How do I go about reclaiming both of these overpayments please?


Please note...getting the maternity pay monthly is NOT an option

once you get the p45 from the employer wait 35 days and call HMRC and they can process a in year refund regarding the tax overpayment or complete a p50 repayment claim online. in regards to the maternity pay if the employer was submitting the lump sum in one go but it was meant to be across 2 tax years you'd need to write in to HMRC to explain that the payment is spread across 2 years.
