ID and References

Friend is going for his interview and the interviewer has asked for his ID and references to bring with him. Is this normally done after the position has been offered? He doesn’t want to give details before, in case he doesn’t get offered the position.

Why is he going for an interview with a firm he doesn't feel comfortable sharing his basic personal details with?
References are more understandable if he is afraid of them contacting his current employer. The usual thing is to supply contact details for your previous employer, but for your current one say "I am currently employed and will be happy to supply a reference from my current employer should an offer be made".0 -

When I was interviewed by a bank once, I had to take ID and bank statements. It was explained to me why though and it seemed fair enough. I've also taken certificated to interviews too (only twice have they actually asked to see them, but again, I think it is a reasonable request so I like to have them to hand.
I have never ever taken references in to a meeting though and I would never ask for them either. I'm trying to think of an industry where this may be standard, but I can't. He should ask for clarification so a) he can be sure what they meant and b) so he can mange expectations of anything he can't provide.0 -
By 'taking references' they are probably requesting the names and addresses of the people / organisations from whom the reference will be requested, rather than the actual reference. If you friend doesn't want anybody contacted unless a job offer is being made he needs to make that clear at the time of interview.0

We have started asking people to bring their passport to interviews so that if they are appointed, we know they've got the right to work in the UK. Names and addresses of referees wouldn't be an unreasonable request, but we've already asked for those on our application form.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Also he is asked for his NI number too. It is required if he begins employment with them but at the interview?0 -
None of what is being requested is unreasonable. It enables them to get any required checks underway more quickly if a job is being offered. Having an NI number doesn't automatically mean having the right to work, but can speed up applying correct details to the payroll system for example.0
