I think you hit the problem, iOS7 expects to be able to backup the apps to iTunes, whereas iTunes no longer accepts them so the backup fails. Depending on what else you have in iTunes you may have more luck by installing the version of iTunes that was around when iOS7 was released.

You'll have to be aware that when you restore your iPad2 with iOS7 you will end up running iOS9 as the restore will always install the latest iOS supported by your device.

Thanks for both of your very useful replies.
I have 2.9 gb free on my ipad and i looked it up and ios9 needs 1.3 gb so i think i should be ok in that regard?

I'm fine with updating to ios9, so that's not a problem.
How would i find the older version of iTunes to try and back up with? I don't have any songs or anything on iTunes so i'm not worried about uninstalling the version i have on my pc

towards the bottom, itunes 10.7 should be compatible

I've been trying to do it all night with no luck so far.
I tried to download 10.7 and eventually learned you had to uninstall everything apple and not just itunes.
I eventually managed to do that and then found i needed 11.1 in order to back up my ipad. Of course that would be too easy if that was on the list of apple downloads, so I downloaded that from filehippo, no idea if that was wise or not.
Now when i try to backup on this version 'encrypt local backup' is ticked and password protected without me setting one and it eventually says your ipad can not be backed up to this computer because the backup could not be saved on this computer.
    God i hate iTunes!

No because it says i have to have version 12 of itunes in order to upgrade to ios9 and I remember when i did have version 12 it said it had to back up before it could install it (which it couldn't of course) so it's a catch 22 situation.

    Bummer!

The lesson from all this is never let iTunes or IOS get too far out of step.

There are several alternatives, some of them free, that will back up your iPad to the PC. You can then do a factory reset and hopefully then do the IOS upgrade.

    Yep a lesson learned!
Could you recommend one of these free alternatives?

    I'm afraid I can't.

I'm not a Windows user, I sorted out the girlfriends iPad on one of my Linux boxes using Amarok but it was a while ago and I'm not sure if it supports the newer versions of IOS. I think when the girlfriend had this issue it was IOS 5.
