A couple of things in action, a big price increase so they can knock a penny off every month and claim it as a price reduction and less profitable lines making way for Christmas stock.

    What's going on?

The wholesale price of butter has gone up. Sterling has fallen.

Rising cream prices also helped push up butter prices throughout October, with fat supplies tight. Although much of the butter in Private Storage Aid is thought to have been pre-sold already, some was still traded this month at around £3,500-3,600/tonne. However, a second tier in pricing was also seen this month, with freshly manufactured butter fetching a premium price of around £3,900-4,000/tonne towards the end of October. Although demand was fairly tentative, those looking for cover needed to pay relatively high prices to secure product, as little butter was available for spot trade.

Aldi's butter is Country Life in Aldi packaging in any case, so the OP's point was misplaced - unless he happens to object to the fact that Aldi is German owned.

Also (and to file under 'not a lot of people know that') is that Anchor is no longer New Zealand butter and hasn't been for some time. How they got away with that marketing sleight of hand I will never know

Made in Westbury Wiltshire, so pretty much unaffected by the sterling situation.

And this from the Daily Mail online site
Wholesale butter prices were up a staggering 75.8 per cent on last year at £3,600 a tonne. And the figure is now closer to £3,800 a tonne.

and it seems to be that so many dairy farmers have given up over the last five years. This does not bode well as imported cheese will soon be unaffordable for most. I will be interested to see what price our cream is during the festive season.

    But the arithmetic looks pants!

Well, according to the Daily Mail, Britain faces a 'Christmas Pudding Crisis' due to a shortage of cream and butter.:)
