NI contributions at 65

I shall shortly reach 65 and will continue to work, but also take my State Pension. Will I continue to have NI conts deducted ? Is it up to me to inform my e'er wages dept., or.....what ? My pension is based on 29 years NI conts.
thanks

Have you obtained a new state pension statement?

It is best to inform your employer that you have reached State Pension Age. Although their HR system "should" know your age it is not certain. The problem with NI is that each payment stands on its own and refunding it takes some doing.

My employer didnt realise when I reached 65 despite the fact that I told them and it took ages to sort the mess out.

When I reached 65 I was sent an Exemption certificate by DWP. I sent a copy of this to my wages dept and now no more NI contributions

Take home pay is up by 10%+ very nice.

    Cheers fj

If you can afford to defer your state pension whilst you're still working, it does increase rather nicely for when you do give up work.

I got one of those as well but it was a long time after I reached SPa!

You just need to tell your employer and give them sight of your birth certificate if they ask. You don't actually need the DWP certificate but it could be useful if you were to start a new employment.
  • As I understand it, when you reach your State Pension Age you are no longer liable for NI contributions. That's been our experience. It's a nice little saver, if you choose to keep working. As has been said, if you can afford to defer State Pension payments then it's a good deal (although not as good as it was just a couple of years ago).
