Season Ticket Refund Question

Hi guys,

I have a question about season rail ticket refunds.

I've basically got a 7 month job contract in London. I paid for travel 1 month only, but now I have 6 months remaining on my contract.

I can either get 6 months season ticket or pay on a monthly basis for a season ticket (the cost savings for getting 6 months in one go is negligible).

However, I was wondering if its feasible to get a 1 year rail ticket and then once the six months are up on my contract, get a refund?

It may be the case that my contract is renewed or I move to another Dept at the company I work for, but my logic is that, If I got a 1yr season ticket, I would save roughly £500 over 6 months compared to buying a monthly or 6 month season ticket.

The National Rail Ts and Cs regarding refunds are a bit unclear.

Thanks in advance

You can get a season ticket at the monthly rate for any period from one month to one year, so as you say, buying one for one month or six months will be at the same rate.

If you were to buy a one year season ticket and cancel it after (say) six months, any refund due would calculated as if you had bought a ticket at the monthly rate. You may also need to pay a £10 admin fee, but I'm not sure about that.

Having said that, there are other benefits of a yearly season - a Gold Card is just one. A Gold card gets you other train tickets at a third off, so that will be worth something to a lot of people.

Not tried it but sometimes a changeover to another ticket may be cheaper.
