Fine sold to a debt collector, now a debt or still a fine?

Hi All,

Rather embarrassed that it turns out a few years ago whilst on holiday abroad (Norway) I incurred a speeding fine. Didn't know it at the time and ive heard nothing until today when I receive a letter from a debt collector claiming to be working on behalf of The Norwegian local government where the alleged crime took place and demanding the equivalent of £650. I've visited their website and it appears genuine. I was just wondering whether this is now officially a "debt" not a "fine" and whether it will have effected my credit rating here in the UK as a defaulted debt?

    Hi,

As it stands it won't appear on your credit file.

In theory they could start a court claim here, which would then appear on your file if you lost, or was not cleared within 30 days of judgement.

However that course of action is rare, not heard of one case brought from abroad for such a thing, as yet !!

Foreign DCA's usually make a bit of noise for a while, then go quiet.

Anything is possible, never seen it myself though.

Don't think uk DCA's get involved with foreign debt purchase, almost impossible to prove liability.

    Hi Orta117,

I think you need to search for an advice service in Norway to really understand this issue and find out more about how these offences are processed there. It may not follow the same rules as in the UK so you are best to start by taking advice from the country it began in.

Could you post a few more details, such as the name of the debt collector chasing the money (could it be a bailiff), whether or not you have had any notices from the UK magistrates courts about this, how much is it for and are you able to clear it in full?

I appreciate this is worrying, but debts can be chased abroad, the issue is, when they originated somewhere else, it can be a lot harder to advise you. Hopefully, with a few more details, you can move in the right direction.
