  • Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. :( Please can you take me through your application - are you BR, & if so did you tell them when you applied? If you didn't, your application will go through the normal credit scoring process, at which point it would fail. If you told them & said you wanted an account with no credit or overdraft facilities, then they would bypass the credit scoring and only do the fraud checks. The only other reason for turning down your application would be if something else was found on your credit file that affected the application.

I suggest you contact the Co-op and ask them why the application was turned down. It may be that they say you have to contact a credit reference agency for the info, in which case it would be worth you doing so (I think the cost is only £2) to find out what's on your credit file that could have affected it. If the Co-op tell you (or you find out) that it's because you didn't tell them you're BR or they say it's because you didn't make it clear which account you wanted so they thought you wanted a standard account with all the usual facilities, then I suggest you ask if you can submit another application on those grounds & see what they have to say. Please let us know how you get on.

Have you tried an account with Barclays? I believe they're the other bank you can apply to if you're BR. You'll find more info in the sticky here. :)

  • Hi again yes i went bankrupt in july and only applied for a basic account all done by post and br was not mentioned
    thank you for your help
  • Oh, I think that's what it is then. They didn't know you were BR, so treated your application like a normal one, doing all the credit scoring etc & you failed it. Not to worry, just contact them again - explain that you didn't realise you needed to put it down, as yours was a postal application & the question wasn't asked on the form. They may say that you can't re-apply for 3 months or something like that, but I think they'll let you have the account in the end. If you have a branch nearby, then make an appointment to do the application in person, so that you can bring any paperwork they need with you & answer any questions they've got. Good luck. :)

    Hi Jo,

I agree with wdiag. When we opened our "cash minder" account the guy we spoke to wanted to open a deposit account alongside. We went through all the relevant information and the "cash minder" account was opened with no problems and the deposit accounts was declined.

Stress that it's the Cash Minder Account you want to open.

    Regards

    Richard
  • I phoned the coop re opening a cashminder account and they said they only open accounts to UK and EU passport holders. I am not a holder of either yet I have permanent residency and have been here over 20 years now. I will apply anyway as it may have just been someone ignorant answering the call.

  • I'd like to add that on my application I wasn't asked if I was BR, but it went through. That said, I had the application in the system BEFORE I went BR, but didn't get details of the new account until afterwards.

fiveyearplan, I'm intrigued. If you're foreign (which you seem to suggest you are as you say you have been resident for 20 years) how did you cross border controls without a passport? I'm genuinely interested rather than having a pop.:D
