Contact whilst off sick

Hello, I've worked for my employer for 5 years now and have never had a sick day. However the past 4 weeks I've been signed off sick by my doctor as I am unable to work currently, the sick note has another 2 months to go to allow for medical investigations and treatment as they aren't sure what is causing my condition.
I got a letter in the post from my employer stating they hadn't heard from me for a while and essentially told me I had to get in contact. I did so, was told I had to ring in daily even whilst off sick and had to attend fortnightly meetings.
I have managed to negotiate this down to ringing in weekly, but as I am signed off sick do I legally have to do this? As well as attend meetings? It is very difficult for me to get to these meetings and ringing in is difficult for me to do so.
Many thanks.

Are you on full sick pay? If so then I suggest you accommodate your employer as best you can.
How about offering your line manager to have a meeting at your home if they wish?
    Why is phoning an issue?
  • Hi.ive just been off sick for 3 weeks and during that time i had to keep my line manager updated about twice a week.via phone and even going in to see him with new sick note.
  • Phoning in daily seems a bit excessive , the outfit I worked for required managers to do a home visit after 28 days and regular contact , if the person was off sick with something long term ie cancer then it was not expected that I would contact that person or his spouse more than once a month for an update, unless I had information to give.

If the person was sick with something less serious ie a broken leg I would call once every 10 or so days , I wouldn't be expected to do a welfare visit after the 28 day one.

I suggest if you are in a union you seek advice as it's up to the employer to contact you , not for you to phone in each day or weekly and possible be held in a queue, most companies have a sickness policy I suggest you ask your union rep, ( if there is one) to forward a copy to you.

A home visit is the norm , unless your place of work local to your address , I wouldn't expect someone sick to drag themselves on transport to pop in.
