Running away from debt....

  • To put your flippancy into context. There are people on here who have been left picking up debts after the death of a spouse. Others who lost their jobs through genuine illness and disability. I know of at least one couple who lost their way financially following the death of their very young child. We have watched people - friends in fact - on here battling their debts whilst fighting cancer (Taxi, Kissjen, RIP). Your comments come dangerously close towards taking the right royal p*55 out of an awful lot of people - can I cordially suggest that "when in a hole, the best course of action is to stop digging" . You spent money you didn't have - is the bottom line, A lot of us on here did it. Most of us turned into adults, realised we were wrong, and turned our attentions towards doing the right thing and dealing with it. PLEASE don't feel it's appropriate to waltz onto these forums as a newbie and behave in a way that others may quite genuinely find upsetting.

It's a fair point and I apologise for the glib flippancy. Humour is a defence mechanism to inevitable judgments that were coming and no offence was intended.

This is certainly the case as all of the banks sold the debts to collection agencies so the debts would have been treated as defaulted in that respect?

The banks wouldn't have sold the accounts on without defaulting them first.

check all three credit files, see if any of these ever went to CCJ.
The issue may be that if you haven't opened these letters or run from addresses that a CCJ may have been filed at a previous address for you and you wouldn't know until you do some digging if your previous addresses and your current one aren't linked properly. That means in theory an old CCJ could be lurking for a while.

    All three credit files?

I think the not willingness comes mostly from the fact I am unable.

Speaking purely pragmatically, and completely forgetting the moral aspect.

I do not believe 5k is enough to justify the hassle you will endure for the foreseeable future with regards to your finances. Even if you don't care about paying these back being the right thing to do. I think it might still actually be the right thing to do, the downside is too great for such a small amount of money.

I'd go as far as to say you may even end up paying more than that in increased interest over the next coming years due to your trashed credit file.

All of that said, from that perspective your credit file is probably already ruined so I think you may be past the point of return with regards to salvaging your credit file.

After 6 years of non payment/no contact etc, debts should be removed from your credit file, but lenders will still keep you on file and not go near you with a barge pole.

What file is that then ???

That's a bit of an untruth actually.

OP, if your debts range from that long ago, the debts will long ago of left your credit file, and won't show anywhere now.

They would be statute barred by now as previously stated.

If anyone should contact you about them, you would respond with the statute barred letter from the National Debtline website.

Creditors have 6 years (in England and Wales) to recover overdue debts, if they fail to do so, that's there problem.

Shocking attitude, Jimmy. The problem is that there are millions of other people out there thinking along the same lines. And to put it down to carelessness of youth is a cop out. You are grown up now, so face up to your responsibilities like a decent human being.

Why when they are statute barred ??

What is the point now ?

Every post Barr one or two has been about the moral aspect rather than what the lad actually asked.

Banks will of written these debts off years ago, all you will do by paying now is put money into the coffers of some bottom feeder DCA, where is the moral in that ????

If they were defaulted 8-12 years ago, they woud have disappeared from his credit file by now?

He posted in a way that was always going to inflame and enrage those who have taken a different attitude to dealing with their debts, in fairness. I can understand people being upset, particularly those who have been around long enough to remember the likes of Taxi etc.
