Maplins sell 40 AA batteries for £7.49, so its not really worth ripping a lantern battery apart.

Rechargeables work out much cheaper than either, and these days hold more power than disposables.

I have done this but with the 6V lantern batteries to turn it into a 3v battery (it contains F size). The small 9V PP3 batteries have 6 * AAAA batteries.

If you can find Alkaline versions of these good luck to you. Mostly they are as the previous post says the cheapie zinc ones.

Its not worth the hassle and danger for most people.
