Refused credit cards despite Experian score of 999

Options
Hi all,

I'm quite confused... I have had a Barclaycard in the past (as a student, built up a bit of debt and eventually paid it off).
Since leaving studies around 8 years ago, I've had no use for a credit card and, as such, never applied for one.
Recent circumstances have meant I may frequently need to fly back and forth to Scotland and would quite like to rent a car while I'm there.
Now, I know of a great wee place in Glasgow where I don't need a credit card to rent, but as a lot of my time will be over in the East, I'd quite like to be able to just hire from Edinburgh Airport (but I need a credit card...)
Despite sitting on an Experian score of 999 (the old card clearly has fallen off the report by now!) I have been rejected, today, by MBNA (95% eligibility on here...) and TSB (90% match on Experian...)
Everything looks correct on my report (no negative factors), so what can I do to improve my chances?! Are there specific 'not likely to make money off this guy' cards out there?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

You've found out that your credit score is meaningless. Ignore it.

What do your credit files show? Are you on the ER? It sounds as if you have very limited history, in which case you may want to look at the sub prime cards.

As we often say in this situation, ask Experian to issue you a card then. Or do as zx81 and ignore a meaningless number (and consider the other points raised).
  • Is ER Experian Report? If so, yes.
Report shows my phone, bank accounts and utilities - I don't have anything else,
I suppose I do, now, have a limited history. In the past I had the credit card and an overdraft - both >6 years ago so don't show on my report anymore.
Can you recommend any sub-prime cards/companies?

What did your bank say (the one that receives your income and sees your spending, and therefore knows more about you than Experian) when you approached them for a credit card?
  • Electoral Roll... Of course... Apologies!
Yes, and I've just checked to make sure Experian know that - will give it a shot with the others you mentioned. Any harm done by my two refusals is already done by now so I might as well!
    Thanks for your help
  • I actually haven't gone to them - as its a Scottish bank and I can't walk in and have a chat where I live now

Do they have a telephone? Or perhaps an online presence?
  • You know... They just might! ;)

    Do they have a telephone?

    No. They're in Scotland.

Try to keep up, YB. :)
