Meat offer in weekly newsletter

Options
Am trying to work out if the meat offer in the newsletter is a good deal? Technically I could get similar cuts/size for less in aldi/lidl. Is the taste/quality worth the extra cost. What do you guys think?

    Hi OP

I buy meat from Market Porter when they have offers, the quality is very good, and I like the fact they source from regional farmers etc

It is not cheap compared to some supermarket meat, but it depends on your circumstances, we are now mainly just 2 adults with grown up children popping in from time to time, so it is a cost I am willing to pay for.

However, when we were a family of 5 especially when the 3 kids were teens, I would buy Aldi meat, whole chickens, legs of lamb etc and stretch them as far as they would go to warrant the cost, the quality is very good.

Basically, if you can afford it, give it a go, but you will get similar for cheaper from supermarkets just without the providence - I would check out your local family butcher too, just to fairly compare (and you can choose what you fancy).
Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

Honestly, the only way to find out is to try it!
We eat smaller amounts of meat, from our local butcher, with knowledge about the provenance & animal welfare.
Mince for instance 'does down' less so you get more cooked meat from the same raw weight. I also find it easier to 'stretch' tasty meat. However, sometimes you do just have to buy cheaper meat and add flavour in other ways - I think it's worth trying out to see what works best for your family.

My butcher also does a 'family' deal every week for £20 - as there are only 2 of us I don't take much notice - other than to think it's good value - perhaps I should take notes next week and post it on here for comparison.

Took note of the weekly deal, and would be interested in what MSEers think. This is a traditional butcher, all meat with provenance and to high welfare standards. Pie & sausages made by his team, to traditional recipes - all excellent.
    £20 gets you:
    1 x 4lb.chicken
450g each of mince and diced beef
    6 sausages (about 450g)
    1 family pie

I think this could easily be a weekly shop for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 pre-teen kids) and I think I'd end up with a few left-overs as well. I think if there are teenagers or people doing hard physical work, it would need some good stretching, but not too difficult.

    Opinions?

    Against lidl prices, expensive

Here in NI our meat in lidl is locally sourced

Might not have the name of the animal but can be tracked all the same

    I get a large chicken for £4

    800grm mince £2.69

    12 sausages £2 something

    A family pie say £4

( never buy made pies so not 100% sure )

So £14 and leaves me £6 to get the veg

    Our local butcher has:
    1lb/454g minced steak
    1lb/454g lean stewing beef
    1lb/454g lean shin beef
1lb/454g sausage (they have about a dozen varieties to choose from)
    1lb/454g minced pork
    1lb/454g gammon steak
    1lb/454g diced pork
    1lb/454g skinless chicken fillet
    2 steak burgers
for £30.00 - not cheap compared with some, but good quality and a chance to have a mixture of meats/cuts.
