Debt collecting from wrong address

I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum or not but can't really see a more suitable one. A letter from HMRC has come to my address which I opened and read only to discover it wasn't actually my name which was on it though it was my address. Basically the person named on the letter owes HMRC money and they say in the letter that they have now put it in the hands of a debt collector. I don't want debt collectors turning up at my house but will HMRC believe me when I tell them I've not heard of this guy? I expect he lived at my address at one time or maybe he has just given a false address. What's the best course of action, phone HMRC but anything else I can do?

    Hi,

You won't get debt collectors turning up at your door, most likley you will get letters and phone calls.
So, as a matter of courtesy, best to send in a letter to HMRC stating the person there after no longer lives at that address.

Once you've done that you can ignore further attempts to contact this person, if it's not your name, it's not your problem.

I had similar with a previous tenant here who I don't know. I even had a letter addressed to the occupier asking if I knew the person from the water company. Told people that the person no longer lived here and that I didn't have a forwarding address. Now if any post arrives it is put into recycling. I checked with Royal Mail it is acceptable to do so.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
