On this BR board, I think most people who've ended up going BR will have previously tried to either reduce their payments or get more time to make them. By the time they've decided to go BR, those doors have been firmly shut in their faces - creditors go deaf to anything except trigger phrases, such as "I will pay everything you want by the date you want it" and "I will pay every penalty charge you throw my way". If people had enough money to offer final settlements they'd do so, but people who go BR don't have the money for that. If you read through the threads, you'll see just how much people struggle to find the BR fees, & how much stress they go through before making that decision.
People wanting to reduce their payments aren't asking because they want to get a designer handbag with the money or go on a fancy holiday - they're asking because they don't have the money to make the full payment. If creditors would realise that, they'd then surely get the point that getting all the money due eventually is better than someone going BR & not getting much or any of it at all.
Why not post your question on the Debt-free Wannabe part of the forum? I think offering settlement amounts is something that's had more success there.
