Civil service fixed term appointments... extension?

I started on a FTA and was made permanent so it can happen.0

Back in the early late 1990s and early 2000s MoD hired loads of FTA accountants, all on three years contracts coming in at the maximum of the pay band. Grades ranged from HEO to Grade 6 (as they were at the time)
All were given the choice to become permanent at the end of their contract.
When this happened it was rumoured the way the contracts were worded would have meant unfair dismissal claims if any were terminated.
It seems the Civil Service has now got its act together with regard to termination at end of contract. Or maybe it was only MoD who couldn't write a decent contract

Thanks for all the help :-)
I'm not going to lie, it's not the answer I was looking for but I will of course put my all into it, as I did in my last job, and look to climb the ladder a few rungs through applying for other jobs after 20 months or so. Roll on a few weeks time when I start!!0
