new bank account after being discharged

Hi

Prior to bankruptcy up to the present date I used my hubbys bank account for my wages but now we need to either get my name added to his account, or open up a joint account elsewhere. this would be the better option as abbey are pretty poo lately and although we have never had any charges on his account I hear that they can be quite high.

has anyone experienced problems opening bank accounts after being discharged? i applied to abbey before but was only working a few hours a week then and they weren't interested in me, but now have a more substantial amount going into his account each month.

  • I would imagine that for at least a year, you will have to look at the accounts that are BR friendly such as Co-op, Barclays and Nationwide. I would imagine that you will still have difficulty getting a Visa or Maestro card.

If you need a credit card, there is always the pre-paid options such as www.cashplus.co.uk. You can even have your wages paid onto that card - it is a Mastercard to accepted worldwide.

  • HI all,
I'm 3 and a half years after BR (discharged over 2 yrs ago) and still having probs getting a 'normal' bank account. I would find it really helpful if there was a sticky post about after discharge bank accounts if people have been successful getting them. It is a bit of a catch 22 as applying means credit searches which seems to mean less chance getting accepted. I did find that I have still got accounts showing amounts owing to creditors that were included in BR, so am trying to sort that out. I had 2 diff accounts with LTSB included in BR and despite sending a proper letter asking them to put it as 'partially satisified' they only adjusted one! The other one was a debt 'sold on' by HSBC after BR and I can't find details of who to write to!!!! The 3rd one is a catalogue company who seem to change departments every time I try to get in touch! AAAAAGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to be a negative post, but my advice is keep on top of what credit ref agencies have on file - don't leave it assuming it was fixed when the creditors said it would be!
