Finding a broker

Does anyone have any advice on finding a good broker? We may be leaning more towards sub prime but with more time given we may be able to go for a high street lender. I've googled mortgage brokers local to me but nothing stands out. Do they even need to be local to us, assuming everything can be done electronically? Should I be looking for a firm/group or a one man band? I've been told by friends to steer clear of estate agents in-house brokers. Many thanks

Go for someone independent rather than linked to a bank or estate agent etc. I would look for recommendations from people you know, that's what we did.0

As stated, recommdations are best. Avoid 'Estate Agents' brokers.
Geography is not important, we have done cases from Shetland to Scilley without a problem.
A good source is unbiased.co.uk but ignore the 'connect with an adviser' button. Use the search tool.
Sites like TrustPilot are full of client reviews.I am a Mortgage Broker
